A Beethoven Journey

Coming to cinemas in 2016!

Filmed over the course of four years award-winning director Phil Grabsky follows leading concert pianist Leif Ove Andsnes’s attempt to understand and interpret one of the greatest sets of works for piano ever written: Beethoven’s five piano concertos.

Considered one of the top pianists of the age, Leif Ove Andsnes offers rare insights into the mind of a world-class pianist and access to his personal and professional life.  Against the wonderful background of Leif Ove playing these five pieces, we also peel back the many myths of Beethoven’s life from prodigious talent in Vienna, to greatest composer alive by the time he wrote the fifth concerto.  Perhaps above all it is the fresh new biography of Beethoven that is most revealing.

Florence and the Uffizi Gallery

In cinemas 21 November!

Participating Cinemas

‘Florence and the Uffizi Gallery 3D/4K: a journey into the heart of the Renaissance’ is much more than a classic Art documentary: it’s a multi-dimensional, multi-sensory journey into the Italian Renaissance through the most beautiful, representative works of art of the period.

For the first time in cinema theaters worldwide comes an art film on the veritable open-air museum that is the city of Florence in which 3D technology ensures a totally immersive, unprecedented viewing experience: works of art speak for themselves with all the power of their extraordinary beauty enhanced by 3D vision.

A stimulating “emotional” commentary is given by a major, leading Renaissance figure, our guide Lorenzo the Magnificent, played by Simon Merrells.  From a timeless limbo, he takes us through a tour of “his” Florence, the cradle of Renaissance culture, all to the splendid accompaniment of carefully selected music. Also featured are valuable artistic contributions made by experts such as Antonio Natali, the Director of the Uffizi Gallery for almost 10 years; Marco Ciatti, Superintendent of the ‘Opificio delle Pietre Dure’ and Arturo Galansino, Director of Palazzo Strozzi.

Not only does this Art Film promise a unique 3D/4K viewing experience but it also offers an emotionally moving and engaging narrative.

The Greatest Art Collection in History Like You've Never Seen It Before!

VATICAN MUSEUMS 3D, a SKY production in collaboration with the Vatican Museums Directorate, for the very first time brings Ultra HD 4K/3D film cameras inside the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, to show the masterpieces in these collections as they have never been seen before.

Thanks to a unique mix of native 3D and the most advanced dimensional techniques used in cinema by directors such as James Cameron and Tim Burton, audiences can immerse themselves in the great masterpieces of art history: “enter” the paintings of Caravaggio and, with unprecedented realism, touch Laocoön and the Belvedere Torso, and feel swathed by the figures in the Sistine Chapel that have never seemed so real before.

Director of the Vatican Museums, Professor Antonio Paolucci, expertly leads us through the past, present and future of the Vatican Museums. From the masterpieces of classic statues to the Cast of Michelangelo’s Pietà, right up to Fontana’s modern sculptures; from paintings by Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio to those by Van Gogh, Chagall and Dalì; from the extraordinary frescos in the Rooms of Raphael, such as “The School of Athens” to the spectacular masterpieces by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel such as the “Creation of Adam” and the majestic “Last Judgment”. Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty

AUSTRALIAN CINEMA SCREENINGS STRICTLY LIMITED SEASON FROM SEPTEMBER 7

★★★★ "WONDERFUL. Bourne’s clever gothic re-write has discovered something beguiling and true"  The Guardian

2013 Olivier Award Nominee for Outstanding Achievement in Dance

Matthew Bourne’s SLEEPING BEAUTY sees the choreographer return to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of the composer’s ballet masterworks that started in 1992 with Nutcracker! and, most famously, in 1995, with the international hit Swan Lake with an all-male cast.

Perrault’s timeless fairy tale, about a young girl cursed to sleep for one hundred years, was turned into a legendary ballet by Tchaikovsky and choreographer, Marius Petipa, in 1890.

Bourne takes this date as his starting point, setting the Christening of Aurora, the story’s heroine, in the year of the ballets first performance; the height of the Fin-de-Siecle period when fairies, vampires and decadent opulence fed the gothic imagination. As Aurora grows into a young woman, we move forwards in time to the more rigid, uptight Edwardian era; a mythical golden age of long Summer afternoons, croquet on the lawn and new dance crazes. Years later, awakening from her century long slumber, Aurora finds herself in the modern day; a world more mysterious and wonderful than any Fairy story!

Matthew Bourne’s haunting new scenario is a gothic fairy tale for all ages; the traditional tale of good vs. evil and rebirth is turned upside-down, creating a supernatural love story, across the decades, that even the passage of time itself cannot hinder.

Britain’s most popular dance showman works again with three of his regular collaborators, and New Adventures Associate Artists; The Tony and Olivier award winning designers, Lez Brotherston (set and costumes) and Paule Constable (Lighting) and Sound Designer, Paul Groothuis who created the acclaimed surround-sound for last years hit production of Cinderella.

Running time: 105 mins

★★★★ "Strikingly fresh...Witty, inventive and touching" Mail on Sunday

★★★★ "Tongue-in-cheek humour, contemporary references and accessible theatrical dance" Time Out

★★★★ "Extraordinary. Fantastic. Dazzling. Masterful." Sunday Express

Pompeii for Schools

IN CINEMAS FROM AUGUST 29

DIRECT FROM THE BRITISH MUSEUM

Pompeii for Schools is a ground-breaking cinema event specially created for children aged 7-11. Presented in a lively and entertaining style designed to engage a young audience, the film explores behind the scenes of the British Museum’s blockbuster exhibition ‘Life and death in Pompeii and Herculaneum’ and links to the curriculum across a range of subjects, including history, science, art and design, PSHE and citizenship.

Pompeii and Herculaneum were two Roman cities devastated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Buried in ash and volcanic stones for hundreds of years before being rediscovered, both cities have been partly excavated, revealing many fascinating objects and buildings that tell us about the lives of the Roman people in the 1st century.

During Pompeii for Schools children’s television presenters Ed Petrie and Naomi Wilkinson, accompanied by children from London primary schools, discover what life was like for Romans living in the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. From blind food tasting and simulating volcanic explosions, to Latin lessons and excavating Roman remains in the British Museum basement, Pompeii for Schools tells the dramatic story of events leading up to the eruption of Vesuvius and its devastating impact on the inhabitants of both cities.
