Life’s rich tapestry unravels in this French-Italian ensemble comedy as a family faces the decision to sell their castle.
Set in between the picturesque region of Piedmont in Italy and the bustling city of Paris, A Castle in Italy follows the trials and tribulations of Louise (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi) as she struggles to keep her once wealthy family together. Louise is a devoted daughter and sister, who shares a close bond with her terminally-ill brother Ludovic (Filippo Timi), and mother (played by her mother in real life Marisa Bruni Tedeschi). Louise’s sense of duty to her family is stretched thin when the family falls into financial troubles and has to make the decision to either sell off the family mansion, or open it to the public.
A Castle in Italy deftly shifts between humour and poignancy to deliver a satisfying and visually-beautiful exploration of family, relationships and mortality; their mother is forced to confront the unpleasant notion of selling off the family home, Ludovic struggles in coming to terms with his condition, while Louise, at 43, is desperate to have a child. Has she found love with Nathan (played by the young Louis Garrel) or does she need something more?
The latest semi-autobiographic feature written, directed and starring Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi (Actrices and Easier for a Camel), A Castle in Italy was the only film by a female filmmaker in Competition in the Cannes Film Festival in 2013.
