8 & 9 December 2012
Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes (approx, subject to change)
The world-famous choreographer Jiří Kylián is a source of inspiration to many. For over thirty years he has been the artistic director and in-house choreographer of NDT and one of the most important founders of the company. During this evening, you will see two of his ballets from the renowned ‘Black&White’ series, as well as new works from the generations that came after Kylián: NDT dancer and choreographer Medhi Walerski. As a dancer, Walerski has created with the Czech master choreographer and has been formed significantly by him.
Please note change in original programming: "NDT had to make a hard, last minute decision to change the programme . Aswe were not able to clear the music rights for Sunset Logic (a new creation), we will have to show another ballet. Instead of the new Johan Inger, NDT will present Swan Song by Sol León & Paul Lightfoot." - Nederlands Dans Theater

ABOUT THE BALLETS
CHAMBER (Contains scenes of nudity) For over ten years, French choreographer Medhi Walerski was a leading dancer at NDT until 2008 when he made his debut as a choreographer. His work was such a success that he was repeatedly invited to create ballets for NDT and other companies. For Chamber, he worked with English composer Joby Talbot. Taking The Rite of Spring from Stravinsky as a starting point, the two young artists inspired each other and created a stunning piece. SWEET DREAMS This piece looks more like the result of a nightmare than that of a peaceful dream. But those who have seen this ‘masterpiece with the apples’ will never forget it. In this ballet Jiří Kylián takes an ironic look at the complex world of the human sub-conscious. Surrealistic, often erotic and impressive throughout, this ballet only figures in NDT’s repertoire. SARABANDE Jiří Kylián shows here his sense of humour. With six dancers on stage, it is bursting with male energy. The choreography also clearly shows how important music is to Kylián. The beautiful violin sounds by Bach surround a much rawer moment where the dancers use their voices forcefully. Sarabande is so inventive and rich in visual effects that it leaves plenty of room for one’s own interpretation. SWAN SONG Swan Song (2010) is a farewell ballet. The ballet is dedicated to former dancer Stefan Żeromski, who ended his dance career with this piece. As a muse of León and Lightfoot he was of great artistic significance. Philip Glass created a new composition specially for this ballet: Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra. Glass has been one of León and Lightfoot’s sources of inspiration for many years now. Swan Song is the first choreography León and Lightfoot made on music composed expressly for them.
